1. When installing these cartridges, the printer may display the message "The indicated cartridges are non-HP cartridges.” If you see this message, press OK and the printer will be ready to print.

2. If the printer displays "Memory error on indicated cartridges, Event Code: 10.00.00”, open and close the printer front door to clear the message. When the printer displays "The indicated cartridges are non-HP cartridges", press OK and the printer will be ready to print.

After several years of waiting, we are starting to get some lower priced, non-HP, compatible cartridges for the HP M404/M406/M428/M430 series printers (CF258X and CF258A). These cartridges have a new chip, unlike prior aftermarket cartridges that either contained a used chip or required you to transfer your old chip to the replacement cartridge. Used chips, of course, wouldn’t have toner level indication. The new chips are supposed to keep track of your toner level. We don’t know how accurate the toner level readings are, but keep in mind that even with genuine cartridges, toner level s are just an estimate based on many factors including your average percentage toner coverage.

A little background, if you didn’t know this already, all cartridges within the past 20 years or so have a small microchip on them that the printer reads. Of course, HP and other manufacturers have made it very difficult for aftermarket manufactures to develop chips that work in their printers. The CF258X and many other recent models have been particularly challenging for the aftermarket, and we finally have some aftermarket cartridges with chips that are supposed to read toner levels. Although, you may get the errors mentioned above that are easily cleared.
