There are four gears in the envelope feeder with a one way bearing (clutch). The original one-way bearings HP used have a plastic housing and really thin plastic tabs that act as springs to only allow the rollers to spin in one direction. We have replaced all of those clutches with a more durable all-metal design. No plastic springs, it's all metal. We have rebuilt lots of these envelope feeders and they typically fail when enough of the plastic springs break and the one-way bearings stop working. Lots of people tell us the rollers in their envelope feeder must be worn out because it isn't feeding. But the rollers are rarely the problem, it's the one-way bearings.
